stages of growth

We use a ‘stage not age’ approach to learning; this means that learning is guided by where a student is in their development, not by their year group. While age-appropriate learning has its place, our priority is to meet each child where they are — recognising their individual pace and potential, rather than where they are expected to be. Progress is measured through individual achievement, and we celebrate every step forward.
To guide this process we use four Stages of Growth. Each stage shapes our approach, ensuring that teaching matches a student’s readiness and supports their learning journey. Above all, it is the stage your child is working at – not their age – that matters most.

We also recognise that growth is not a straight line — every learner’s journey is unique. Our Stages of Growth framework helps us understand where each student is in their development and how best to support them as they move forward.
Each of our three curriculum pillars — Learning and Processing, Communication and Interaction, and Social, Emotional and Mental Health — is explored across these stages of growth. This provides a clear picture of what progress may look like for each individual, celebrating strengths while identifying the next steps in learning, connection and wellbeing.
These stages are not about fixed milestones, but about readiness, development and opportunity. They guide our staff in shaping learning experiences that are personal, purposeful and filled with possibility — ensuring that every student can grow at their own pace and in their own way.
